Abstrak

Triplicate groups of finggerling catfish, Clarias gariepinus (initial body weight 1.35 g/fish) and tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (initial body weight 2.15 g/fish) were fed for 5 weeks for catfish and 4 weeks for tilapia at 27-28 oC on five isonitgenous (crude protein 41.5% for catfish and 30% for tilapia). Maggot meal was used to replace fish meal at different levels of protein. The control diet at catfish diet contained fish meal as the sole protein, but in tilapia, the control diet contained 45% fish meal and 55% maggot meal. In the other four diets of fish meal protein was substitud by maggot meal. For the

Replacement of fish meal by maggot meal in diet for finggerling catfish (Clarias gariepinus)

Triplicate groups of finggerling catfish, Clarias gariepinus (initial body weight 1.35 g/fish) were fed for 5 weeks at 27-28 oC on five isonitrogenous (crude protein 35%) and isoenergetic diets. Maggot meal (MM) was used to replace fish meal (FM) at different levels of protein. The control diet contained fish meal as the sole protein. In the other four diets of fish meal protein was substitud by maggot meal : 25 (MM25), 50 (MM50), 75 (MM75) and 100%(MM100).

The results showed that feed conversation rate (FCR) for the MM50 group was higher than for other groups. Spesific growth rate in the MM50 group was higher than control and other groups, while there was no significant difference in survival rate (SR) between the control and other groups. The results suggest that maggot meat could replace up to 50% of fish meal protein in diets for finggerling catfish without negative effects on growth and improved feed utilization.

KEY WORDS: Clarias gariepinus, maggot meal, feed utilization and growth.
